Finding things to do nearby

What can I do on dark evenings once the clocks go back?

The first week after the clocks change is the hardest, because the day seems to end just as you finish work. It's easy to decide nothing is worth doing and let the evening go to the sofa and the phone. Resting is fine, but it helps to make sure it's chosen and not just what happens by default.

It helps to treat the dark as a different season of the day and not a shorter version of summer. Some things are better after dark: a lit-up walk around your own neighbourhood, a night market, an evening class or workshop, an hour in a library or museum with late opening, a cosy cafe you'd never sit in on a sunny day, or looking at the stars somewhere without streetlights. Pick one dark-evening thing a week and put it in the diary like an appointment, because evenings fill up with nothing if you don't.

Get outside in daylight too, even for ten minutes at lunchtime. It makes the evenings feel less flat, and it means you aren't relying on the dark hours alone to get some fresh air.
