Workplace wellbeing

How do we start an employee wellbeing programme on a small budget?

Most small firms assume a wellbeing programme means expensive perks, but the biggest drivers of wellbeing at work cost very little: manageable workloads, clear expectations, managers who notice when someone is struggling, and genuine time off. The Health and Safety Executive's latest figures (2024/25) put working days lost to work-related stress, depression or anxiety in Great Britain at 22.1 million, an average of 22.9 days for each case, so getting the basics right is worth the effort even for a small team.

A sensible order is to ask your team what is making work harder (a short anonymous survey or a simple conversation will do), fix one or two of the most common causes, and only then add something small and optional on top. The Acas framework for positive mental health at work follows the same pattern: set a plan, tackle stress at its source, reduce stigma, support managers, and give people resources they can use.

Keep anything you add optional, low-pressure and easy to start. Walking meetings, protected lunch breaks, a no-messages-after-hours norm and a few quiet minutes at the start of a long meeting cost nothing. Choose one change a month, tell the team why you are doing it, and check in after four weeks to see whether it helped before you add anything else.

How 365ALIVE helps

365ALIVE is a consumer app today that gives each person one small, chosen thing a day, with no streaks or leaderboards, so it works as a gentle optional extra and not another target to hit. We are planning workplace pilots for small teams; if you would like to be involved, email hello@365alive.uk.
